Approaching Storm by David Ridley

A dramatic, near-abstract seascape by David Ridley, a burst of light breaking through dark, brooding storm cloud and reflecting across the water in bands of gold, silver and slate. Built up in rich, textured brushwork, this striking square-format painting captures weather at its most elemental.

Approaching Storm pushes David Ridley's atmospheric seascape style toward something close to abstraction, the horizon reduced to a single, dramatic collision between heavy cloud and breaking light. A radiant burst of white and gold erupts at the centre of the composition, fanning outward into darker, smoke-like passages of umber, charcoal and slate as the storm gathers around it. Below, the sea holds a mirrored echo of the sky above, the same light rendered in long, horizontal bands of gold, silver and deep blue-black rippling across the water's surface.

The painting's real strength lies in its symmetry: sky and sea read almost as reflections of one another, the turbulence above matched by the textured, rhythmic brushwork below, so that the entire square canvas feels caught in a single moment of tension between light and dark, calm and storm. Ridley's characteristic impasto technique is at its most expressive here, thick ridges of paint catching gallery light differently depending on where a viewer stands, giving the water in particular a genuine sense of movement and depth.

Where much of Ridley's work anchors itself with a recognisable coastline or distant vessel, Approaching Storm strips the scene back further still, leaving only sky, light and water. The effect is less a specific place than a mood, elemental, dramatic, and quietly meditative all at once.
