St Paul’s Solitude By Ian Faulkner
St Paul’s Solitude – A solitary figure in shirt and braces looks out over the Thames at dusk, London’s skyline glowing beyond Blackfriars Bridge and the dome of St Paul’s rising against the evening sky. Warm lantern light at his feet contrasts with the cool blues of the city, capturing a quiet moment of reflection above the water.

Iain Faulkner St Paul's Solitude
St Paul's Solitude finds Iain Faulkner working in familiar and beloved territory, the lone figure, seen from behind, suspended in a moment of stillness against a backdrop of dramatic urban beauty. Here the setting is unmistakably London, with the illuminated dome of St Paul's Cathedral anchoring the skyline across the Thames, Blackfriars Bridge glowing red in the middle distance, and the river itself catching the last blues of evening.
The man stands at a glass balustrade, sleeves rolled, braces down over a crisp white shirt, a glass held loosely in one hand. Three lanterns flicker at his feet, their warm amber light the only note of heat in an otherwise cool, nocturnal palette of blues and violets. As is characteristic of Faulkner's work, the figure's identity remains withheld, seen only from behind, his attention fixed entirely on the view beyond the frame. The effect is deeply cinematic: a single still from a story the viewer is left to imagine, a pause for thought above one of the world's great cities.
Faulkner's technical command of light, particularly the interplay between artificial glow and ambient dusk, gives the painting a photographic intensity while retaining the painterly softness of his brushwork. This limited edition print is produced on Canson Arches Aquarelle rag paper, chosen for its rich absorbency and archival quality, allowing the depth of the original oil's blues and golds to be faithfully reproduced.
