Wanderer By Iain Faulkner
A lone wanderer walks the shoreline at sunset, hands in pockets, head bowed in quiet reflection as gentle waves break beside him and footprints trail across the sand. Faulkner’s soft dusk palette of lilac, gold and grey captures a private moment of contemplation on an empty beach.

Iain Faulkner Wanderer
Wanderer distils Iain Faulkner's preoccupation with solitude and stillness into its purest form: a single figure, seen in profile, walking an empty beach as the sun dips toward the horizon. Dressed in a waistcoat and shirtsleeves, hands pushed into his pockets, he moves slowly along the tideline, his gaze fixed downward, lost in thought rather than in the view. Behind him, a trail of footprints in the wet sand marks the only evidence of where he has come from.
The composition is built on quiet horizontals, the meeting of sea, shore and sky rendered in soft washes of lilac, peach and grey, with the low sun breaking through cloud to lay a shimmering path across the water. There is no drama here, only the gentle rhythm of waves and the unhurried pace of a man walking with no particular destination. As with much of Faulkner's work, the figure's anonymity invites the viewer to project their own narrative onto the scene, a moment of solitude that feels both deeply personal and universally familiar.
Faulkner's handling of light is central to the painting's quiet power, the way dusk softens colour and form, and the way a single figure can carry the emotional weight of an entire composition.
