Jackie Morris Whooper Swan Book Of Birds

Two whooper swans sweep low in flight, wings fully extended, against a shimmering gold leaf ground, from Jackie Morris and Robert Macfarlane's The Book of Birds. Their bright yellow-and-black bills and brilliant white plumage stand out sharply against the gold as they glide together in formation.

This limited edition print captures the Whooper Swan as it appears in The Book of Birds, Jackie Morris and Robert Macfarlane's compendium of forty-nine British bird species presently declining or endangered. Three swans are shown mid-flight, necks outstretched and wings fully extended, one banking slightly behind the other in close formation, their distinctive yellow and black bills and pure white plumage rendered in Morris's characteristically precise watercolour. The birds' powerful wingspans and streamlined forms capture the quiet strength of a species that migrates vast distances each winter.

The gold leaf ground is applied by hand, its faintly tiled, uneven texture catching the light differently across the surface, a technique rooted in illuminated manuscript tradition that lends real warmth to a bird whose winter arrival on British waters is a signal of the changing seasons. Against the gold, the whooper swan's clean lines and calm poise become the clear focus of the composition.

Whooper swan numbers remain a conservation concern in parts of the UK, and this print sits within a wider body of work concerned as much with conservation as with beauty. Each impression is signed by both Jackie Morris and Robert Macfarlane, and includes a handwritten quotation drawn from the book itself, making every print a unique, hand-finished piece within the edition.
