Sailing Ashore By David Ridley
A brooding, atmospheric seascape by David Ridley, dark storm clouds parting over a silvered sea as two distant sailboats cut through the light. Rich, tactile brushwork and a deep tonal palette of indigo and pewter capture the moody drama of British coastal weather.
Sailing Ashore finds David Ridley working at the height of his atmospheric, textural style, a coastline reduced to its essential elements: sea, sky, land and light. A heavy bank of cloud dominates the upper half of the composition, its dark, storm-laden edges giving way to a luminous break of pale gold and silver at the horizon, the kind of fleeting light that briefly transforms a grey day at the coast. Two small sailboats, their white sails catching that same light, sit far out on the water, offering scale and quiet narrative interest against the painting's otherwise elemental subject.
Ridley's handling of the sea is where the painting's real technical interest lies: built up in thick, textured passages of blue, silver and near-black, the water's surface has genuine physical presence, ridges and troughs of paint that catch gallery light and shift subtly as a viewer moves past. This impasto technique, likely worked with a palette knife alongside brush, gives the water a restless, tactile energy that contrasts with the smoother, more atmospheric treatment of the sky above, echoing the way a real sea holds onto turbulence long after a storm has begun to clear.
A low, dark headland anchors the left of the composition, its silhouette the only solid, unmoving form in a painting otherwise built on light, weather and motion. The overall effect is quietly dramatic rather than turbulent, a coastal scene that rewards the kind of close, sustained looking that reveals just how much texture and tonal variation sits within what first reads as a simple blue-grey palette.
