Jackie Morris Bullfinch The Book Of Birds

A flock of house sparrows takes flight and rests among bramble branches against a shimmering gold leaf ground, from Jackie Morris and Robert Macfarlane's The Book of Birds. Hand-applied gold leaf and Morris's meticulous watercolour detail bring warmth and life to a species now in serious decline across Britain.

This limited edition print captures the House Sparrow as it appears in The Book of Birds, Jackie Morris and Robert Macfarlane's compendium of forty-nine British bird species presently declining or endangered. Four sparrows perch along a thorny bramble stem while two more take flight above them, wings fully extended, rendered with the same close, patient observation of feather, form and movement that runs through all of Morris's ornithological work.

The gold leaf ground is applied by hand, its slightly uneven, tiled texture catching the light differently across the surface, a technique rooted in illuminated manuscript tradition that lends the humble, often-overlooked sparrow an unexpected grandeur. It's a fitting treatment for a bird once so common it barely warranted a second glance, and now a species The Book of Birds asks us to look at properly, perhaps for the first time.

Once one of Britain's most abundant garden birds, house sparrow numbers have fallen sharply in recent decades, and this print sits within a wider body of work concerned as much with conservation as with beauty. Each impression is signed by both Jackie Morris and Robert Macfarlane, and includes a handwritten quotation drawn from the book itself, making every print a unique, hand-finished piece within the edition.
