Paul Evans Springtime
A radiant spring woodland by Paul Evans, a carpet of intense bluebells stretching beneath a canopy of fresh green trees, with soft light filtering through and a distant yellow glow beyond. Bold colour and lively surface texture capture the fleeting brilliance of a bluebell wood in full bloom.
Springtime sees Paul Evans celebrating one of the most iconic moments of the British year. The entire foreground and middle ground are filled with a dense, shimmering carpet of bluebells in deep violet-blues and softer purples, broken by flashes of green and the occasional warmer accent. Tall, slender tree trunks rise through the flowers, their canopies a vibrant lime and emerald green that filters the light and creates a luminous, almost stained-glass effect.
In the distance a band of bright yellow suggests open fields or the edge of the wood catching the sun, while the upper canopy dissolves into softer, light-filled greens. The composition is immersive and slightly elevated, as if the viewer is standing within the wood itself, looking out through the trees. The rectangular format allows the bluebell carpet to expand sideways while the vertical trunks give the painting structure and rhythm.
Where some of Evans’s more open field paintings emphasise horizon and sky, Springtime turns inward to the intimate, saturated world of a bluebell wood at its peak, using intense colour and energetic mark-making to convey both the density of the flowers and the transient quality of spring light.
