Paul Evans
Paul Evans landscape artist is a celebrated British Painter. Widely known for his highly individual watercolours, acrylics and etchings, Paul draws inspiration from East Anglia's coast and countryside, the Sussex Downland, the Kent Weald, and Cornwall's rugged coast and moorland, returning to these same few places again and again to capture them in every season and every light.
A Life Spent Close to Nature
Paul Evans was born and raised in rural Sussex, where a passion for the natural world took hold early. Much of that grounding came from his grandparents, who worked the land, and from Paul's own restless curiosity about the birds, butterflies and plants around him. That early, hands-on relationship with the countryside has stayed with him throughout his career, and it shows in the specificity of his paintings; these are not generic pastoral scenes but the record of someone who has genuinely spent time watching a place change through the seasons.
Paul studied illustration and printmaking for four years, between 1972 and 1976, at Eastbourne College of Art and Design, training under tutors Robert Tavener and Trevor Kemp. He has been able to make his living solely from painting ever since graduating, a rare achievement in itself, and one that speaks to how quickly his work found an audience. He began showing at the Ralph Lewis Gallery in Brighton's Lanes, where, as he tells it, he sold everything he could paint almost immediately.
Building a Career and a Gallery of His Own
In 1988, Paul established his first gallery in Alfriston, East Sussex. He later relocated from his home county to Suffolk in 1992, eventually opening Lavenham Contemporary Gallery, where he continues to sell original paintings, prints, books and cards. Over a career now spanning more than four decades, he has held over fifty solo exhibitions alongside numerous group shows, many of which have sold out within hours of opening.
A Painter of Place, Not Just Landscape
Rather than travelling widely in search of new subjects, Paul has built his reputation on doing the opposite: returning obsessively to a small number of locations and studying them in exhaustive depth. East Anglia's farmland and coastline, the rolling chalk of the Sussex Downs, the historic Kent Weald, and Cornwall's wild coast and moorland form the core of his subject matter, each revisited across every season and every quality of light. This sustained attention is what gives his work its particular sense of place; a scene painted in high summer and the same scene painted again in winter frost become two entirely different paintings, united by the artist's familiarity with the ground beneath them.
Paul has spoken about wanting his paintings to carry more than just the visual facts of a scene, aiming to evoke the sounds, smell and atmosphere of the exact moment he experienced, so that a viewer standing in front of the canvas feels transported to that spot rather than simply looking at a picture of it.
Technique: Constant Experimentation
Paul is known for his original and watercolour paintings and hand signed Limited Edition Prints, alongside acrylic, ink and mixed media work, and for refusing to settle into a single fixed method. He combines traditional brushwork with techniques such as sponging, spattering and layering, building up textured, tactile surfaces that give his skies and meadows a real sense of depth and physical presence. This constant experimentation with materials and technique is a deliberate strategy, a way of finding new ways to reflect the changing light and seasons rather than repeating a formula. In recent years his work has moved toward more abstract backgrounds, while retaining the exquisite eye for detail that defines his central subjects, whether that's a wildflower meadow, a stretch of coastline, or a dramatic sky.

Paul Evans is widely regarded as one of the leading landscape painters working in Britain today, with collectors from around the world seeking out his original works. Alongside his originals, his paintings have been reproduced commercially and continue to reach audiences well beyond his home galleries. Our House Gallery's Market Harborough space is now among the venues where Midlands-based collectors can view and acquire his work directly.
