Iain Faulkner Manhattan Pier First Light
A quiet study of Manhattan Beach Pier caught in the first light of day, the historic roundhouse and its aquarium sign silhouetted against a sky washed in gold. Part of Iain Faulkner's ongoing exploration of coastal architecture and light, this piece captures the pier at its most atmospheric moment, when the rising sun turns the wet sand and shallow surf into sheets of amber and rose.
Manhattan Pier, First Light takes its subject from one of Southern California's most photographed landmarks, yet strips away the postcard familiarity of the scene by focusing entirely on the interplay of light, structure and reflection. The pier's colonnade of pilings recedes into shadow beneath the roundhouse, while the wet shoreline in the foreground mirrors the sky's warm palette back up at the viewer, drawing the eye through the composition from sand to structure to sky.
As with much of Faulkner's coastal and architectural work, the painting relies on tonal contrast and carefully observed reflected light to do its storytelling, the deep silhouette of the pier's underside set against the glow of dawn, and the still, glassy water underfoot holding colour long after the structure above has fallen into shadow.
This is a hand-signed and numbered limited edition print, published in an edition of 66, printed on Hahnemühle Fine Art Agave Paper for archival quality and rich tonal depth.
